Debarati Sengupta is an early-career marine researcher whose research focuses on the ecological preservation of the Indian Sundarbans. As the alumna of the World Ocean Day Youth Advisory Council, she works at the intersection of science communication and international policy.
Through her work in West Bengal as an NYCC Climate Champion, Debarati has successfully bridged the gap between scientific research and community action by engaging hundreds of youth in SDG-focused education. Her strategic intervention in the Sundarbans facilitated intergenerational dialogues among 50+ stakeholders to tackle coastal degradation. This effort culminated in practical environmental restoration, including the planting of mangroves, fostering long-term local ownership and climate resilience.
Debarati continues working on coastal ecosystems, which represent critical knowledge gaps in natural climate solutions. Her practical understanding of blue carbon initiatives was further solidified by her recent engagement as a Visiting Academic at IORA Blue Carbon Hub at CSIRO, Australia in 2025. As she continues her work, she is determined to keep bridging ocean-climate literacy across India.
