Soumyadwip, a geospatial science student pursuing his Master’s in Remote Sensing & GIS from Adamas University, works at the intersection of technology and grassroots climate action in the Indian Sundarbans. Blending GIS tools with indigenous knowledge, he focuses on mangrove restoration, embankment conservation, and climate-resilient livelihoods for vulnerable island communities.
During the NYCC Climate Champions Fellowship, he led the Rhizoresilience initiative to strengthen youth-led socio-ecological restoration across the Sundarbans. Mobilising young people, women SHGs and fishers, he translated complex geospatial and climate concepts into locally actionable solutions. A key intervention, the three-day Sundarbans For Life programme, combined participatory mapping, site-based surveys, and climate literacy sessions to address saline intrusion, embankment risks, and mangrove degradation. The project also piloted Salicornia (halophyte) farming on saline lands, creating climate-resilient livelihood opportunities for women.
Implemented with partners such as Purbasha Eco-Helpline Society, Infosys Foundation, etc, the initiative built a strong foundation for community-led restoration and long-term resilience. Soumyadwip now continues his work through the Climate Data Fellowship 2026 by the Climate Collective, advancing data-driven climate solutions for vulnerable ecosystems.
