Mathiuthonliu Nkengnamai

Mathiuthonliu Nkengnamai is a UGC Junior Research Fellow and doctoral scholar at the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, specializing in sustainable landscape management and climate resilience in the Northeastern Himalayan region. She brings rigorous scientific expertise to pressing environmental challenges. As a UNICEF YuWaah YPAT(2025-2026), Mathiuthonliu contributed evidence-based input to the Draft India Youth Policy, championing the intersection of climate education, green employment, and youth participation. Her work spans agroforestry research, international stakeholder engagement with Sumitomo Corporation, Japan,  and grassroots community outreach across rural Manipur. Rooted in the indigenous Liangmai community of Northeast India, she is committed to translating environmental science into equitable, community-led climate action for a sustainable future. She has conducted grassroots awareness sessions on invasive species and contributed to participatory, community-based plantation initiatives in Lemta Village, ensuring ecological goals align with local livelihood needs.

In her project with NYCC, Roots of Resilience: Youth Climate Action Network (Forests & Waste), Mathiuthonliu aims to address the growing disconnect between rural youth and sustainable environmental practices in hill communities. She plans to conduct community-based climate awareness workshops and practical training on forest conservation, waste management, as well as promote green employment.
